Hunting the jitter Steenbuck of the open plains

13 July 2021
On day 3 of our 5 day hunt, we set off to hunt Zebra on a farm about 60 kilometres from where we stayed. We spotted this very good looking Steenbuck ram, and our client said she wanted him in her trophy room back home. With Steenbucks being territorial animals, we knew he would stay in the area. After we came back from the Zebra hunt, we had a lovely lunch. After lunch, we drove down the road to see if we could spot any old mature Steenbuck rams. Late that afternoon we spotted one, in the distance. We looked at him with the binnos and we knew it as the ram we saw the morning. We set off on foot through the vlei. W even had to take off our shoes, as we walked through the water for about a 150 meters. We slowly made our way towards him. Finally we had a chance to close the gap. He stood for about 5 minutes, just looking towards us. Being in the shade and with the sun behind us, we were able to load the 270 on the shooting stick loaded with 150 grain. We waited for him to give us a full side shot. With the beautiful sound of the shot, we could enjoy our client's happy moment with them by taking some stunning photos. The photos not only captured this trophy animal, but also the beautiful Karoo in the background.
