The Copper Springbuck

09 September 2022.

After a long and hard week of hunting the time arrived for us to set off to our Karoo concession in search for some awesome Springbuck rams. We left the lodge at 04h00 am in the morning and we arrived at the farm at 07h30. We went straight to pick up Stefano our tracker for the day and we set off to the Springbuck camp. We hoped to find The Copper, Common, Black And White Springbuck. After we arrived at the camp, we spotted an old big male Copper with a few ewes and the hunt was on. We sent off on a stalk up the hill. The wind started to blow and we then knew thst this was going to be a long day of hard hunting.

After about half an hour later, we managed to close the gap to about 100 meters. We got a shot, and the wind was blowing gail force. The bullet, a 100 grain Sellier & Bellot out of a 243 is a bit to light weight for gail force winds. We decided it would be better to go for the 338-win mag with 200 grain Winchester Super x bullets. We set off to the hill to glance at the camp in hope to spot the Springbuck again. They only moved in a circle and came back to about 100 meter from where they original was. We started to stalk again. With the wind now form our left hand side, we were able to get close to the herd of about 30 Copper Springbuck. The ram, about 100m from us, was standing with its back towards us while grazing. We decided to take the shot and to put the Vortex Vipers Cross hare on top on the back in hope to penetrate the vital organs. With the cross hair on the spot and the 200 Grain super X chambered in the trigger, the morning's silence was broken. The bullet hit the sweet spot and the Copper Springbuck Ram went down in its tracks. After taking photos, the ram was dropped off at the skinning shed and we set out to have a lovely field lunch. The rest of the afternoon we tried to get the Painted Springbuck ram. All can say is, I think we where the first guys ever to be charged by a Springbuck ram.

We will be back in 2023 to see if we can finish what the ram has started.
